Officer Specialty Branches
 

The Wisconsin Army National Guard offers direct commissions in specialty branches to highly qualified individuals who have acquired special skills through education and employment. If criteria are met, an application packet is assembled and forwarded through military channels for review and consideration. This review process takes approximately three to six months from date of application.

Army National Guard training is normally two days a month and two weeks a year. Our flexible training program allows you to schedule training to minimize interference with your practice.

Medical Corps

The Army National Guard offers physicians and medical students the opportunity to broaden their professional horizons. Army National Guard physicians train with some of the country's and the world's premiere physicians. They utilize unique medical equipment designed to meet the rigorous conditions of military medicine. Professional development and training are foundations of Army National Guard medicine. Army Guard physicians have the opportunity to attend many specialized courses and seminars not always available to civilians. Military training courses are also available to prepare physicians for essential leadership and staff positions.

If you are a physician with a specialty considered a "critical wartime shortage", you may be eligible for up to a $30,000 bonus and $50,000 in student loan repayment. If you are a medical student, you would be eligible for the same bonus and student loan repayment, plus a monthly $1309 stipend while in residency.

If you are enrolled in medical school, you may be eligible for the Medical Student to Medical Corps Commissioning Program. You will be direct appointed as a Second Lieutenant Medical Service Corps and upon completion of medical school commissioned as a Captain Medical Corps, becoming an Army National Guard Medical Officer. Eligible participants in this program may also receive GI Bill with Kicker, and 75% Tuition Grant while attending medical school.

Physicians Assistant Program

If you are you looking for new challenges and ready to take on new responsibilities, plus serve your country in a different and exciting environment, then consider serving as a physician assistant in the Wisconsin Army National Guard.

You will train to practice military medicine that may include advance trauma life support and disaster relief. Much of your service would be in a training environment with the potential of utilizing that training in a wartime scenario.

If you are already a physician assistant as a civilian, you may receive a direct commission as a second lieutenant. You may also be eligible to receive a $30,000 bonus and $50,000 in student loan repayment. As an officer in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, you will experience the feeling of true accomplishment and a sense of pride that comes from knowing you are serving your country and community as a highly qualified health care professional.

Army Nurse Corps

While there are limited opportunities for appointment as a commissioned officer in the Wisconsin Army National Guard Nurse Corps. Eligibility requirements are BSN, licensed as a registered nurse and otherwise meet all applicable commissioning requirements. Some nurses are eligible for special pay including the $1309 per month stipend, BSN STRAP, and HPLR

Dental Corps

Army National Guard dentists are appointed to insure dental readiness and promote dental health for National Guard personnel. They are involved in assessing soldier's dental condition as it applies to individual readiness for deployment.

If you are currently a dentist you may be eligible for up to a $30,000 bonus and $50,000 in student loan repayment. If you are a dental student, you will be eligible for the dental student to Dental Corps Commissioning Program.

If you are enrolled in dental school you will be direct appointed as a Second Lieutenant Medical Service Corps and upon completion of dental school commissioned as a Captain Dental Corps, becoming an Army National Guard Dental Officer. Chaplain Corps

If you are a priest, minister, imam or rabbi, you may be eligible for appointment as an officer in the Army National Guard Chaplain Corps. If you are pursuing a divinity degree, you may be eligible for entrance into the Army National Guard Chaplain Candidate program.

As a military spiritual leader, you will play a vital role in the lives of the men and women in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Chaplains also minister to the needs of the soldier's families. As an Army Chaplain, you will have the opportunity to participate in specialized workshops and receive educational training to enhance your skills.

If your are interested in using your talents and stretching your abilities to the fullest, and knowing that you play an important role in the lives many people, the Army National Guard Chaplain Program could be for you.

Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps

The Judge Advocate General's Corps provides legal services for the Army National Guard and its soldiers.

Judge advocates serve as prosecutors and defense attorneys for criminal trials under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. In addition, they practice international, operation, labor, contract, environmental, tort and administrative law. Judge advocates also provide routine legal service for soldiers, retirees and their families. They practice in military, state and federal courts.

Newly commissioned judge advocates receive immediate responsibility in handling significant legal issues. They encounter a diversified, challenging and rewarding law practice.

There are limited opportunities for appointment in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Interested attorneys must be licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin. Judge advocates enter the Army National Guard as first lieutenants and are promoted to captain between six and nine months later.
